There are so many writing styles and purposes, we don’t always know where to start. For example, you may ask yourself about how to write a thank you note. If you have ever asked, read on and get your answer. WhiteSmoke, the comprehensive writing solution, is happy to present you with guidelines for how to write a thank you note. So whether you need to know how to write a thank you note after an interview, how to write a wedding thank you note, how to write a sympathy thank you note, or how to write a thank you note for a baby gift, your help is here.To begin a thank you note, greet the giver. Don’t be too business-like or formal, unless it is a thank you note after an interview. In any situation, using “Dear____,” is most likely appropriate.
In the first paragraph of your thank you note, express your gratitude. Tell the person you are thanking how much you appreciate the time, gift, service, etc. you received. If you received a monetary gift, do not include the amount or refer to it directly as cash or a check. Instead, write that you thank the giver for his/her generosity, that you appreciate the extravagant gift, or something else to that effect. In the case that you were hosted at someone’s home, refer to the kind hospitality you received. That you do not refer directly to a gift by its name is unimportant; you are writing to recognize what someone did for you, and the person reading your thank you note will understand that.
Continue by discussing the use of the gift. Don’t lie about how you’ll use the gift or go too far in this section, though. If you aren’t especially impressed by the gift, choose the characteristic you like best and describe that. You can have a little fun here by talking about how you’re looking forward to using a new kitchen appliance for instance, but don’t go overboard. It will look fake.
Next, refer to the past and future. Consider why the person gave you the gift and what your relationship is. You might choose to mention a shared experience or a hope for the future here.
Finally, thank the giver again gracefully, and send your regards in your closing.
These tips were intended mostly for how to write a thank you note to someone you know who gave a gift, but if you need to know how to write a thank you note for an interview, consider the tips and alter your style and content slightly to suit the situation.
